A winter storm warning is in effect for some major B.C. highways as an intense Pacific frontal system moves across the south.

A snowfall accumulation of over 35 centimetres is expected to fall over the Coquihalla Highway by late Thursday. In addition, there is a potential for freezing rain over sections of highway during Thursday morning and afternoon.

The forecast predicts that the snow will change into rainfall on Thursday afternoon or in the evening as freezing levels rise above the summit in response to the passage of the warm front.

Hazardous winter conditions are also expected on the Sea to Sky highway. Along the highway snow is expected to become heavy tonight with significant accumulations.

Near Whistler, the snow will become heavy at times during the night. Snowfall accumulations in excess of 30 cm are possible by Thursday, but the snowfall will turn into rain in the afternoon.

Winter Storm Warning

As a result of the weather in the mountains, driving conditions may suddenly become hazardous. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
