LETTER: 'Abusive' Vancouver police department 'does whatever the hell they want and feels the laws do not apply to them'

A reader asks why the VPD 'are harassing citizens for minor bylaw infractions leading to violent arrests and assaults when they blatantly disobey the bylaws themselves'

Re: Witness records violent arrest of cyclist near Commercial Drive (VIDEO) by Mike Howell, Aug. 12, 2020

The Vancouver Police Department said the incident stems from bylaw infractions because the man was allegedly riding on the sidewalk and without a helmet.

Well I would like you to ask the VPD why they are harassing citizens for minor bylaw infractions leading to violent arrests and assaults when they blatantly disobey the bylaws themselves.

Attached are photos I took after watching in disbelief at the blatant disregard for the law by two VPD cops that parked their patrol car at the corner of an intersection that is controlled by traffic lights which is illegal and right under a traffic sign that clearly said "no stopping" so they could cross the street to go into Tim Hortons for donuts and coffee.

This is outrageous that this abusive police dept does whatever the hell they want and feels the laws do not apply to them yet they can assault and harass and arrest a person minding their own business riding their bike without a helmet. And I am certain there were far more important things going on in this city that required police attendance than this nonesense.
