Not long ago I put out a public question to Sarah Blyth and the Vancouver Park Board asking:

"What the heck is this chimney looking thing that sits in China Creek Park at Clark and Broadway? I know that the grass here gets kinda swampy sometimes, is this some sortof ventilation or a direct line to the swamp below? Let us know what the deal is! Thanks!"

And she responded with:

"The chimney is Metro Vancouver's and it is a sanitary sewer ventilation chimney. That area of China Creek is a 'confluence of interceptors' (a bunch of sewers instersect here). The chimney vent is needed for times when gas pressure in the sewer increases. On the downside the chimney can sometimes emit a bit of an odour. On the upside Metro Vancouver just installed* an odour control unit that should minimize the unpleasantness."
