“You can tell that everything is made with care, love and quality.”

So says only one among hundreds of Lower Mainlanders who have given a glowing 5-star review to Sweet Thea Bakery.

From its bustling, aromatic kitchen in Langley, Sweet Thea creates an overwhelming selection of breads, cakes, pastries, cookies and more – all of them crafted to the highest standards and the most respected traditions of European baking.

This means every ingredient in each of its baked goods is 100% natural, and free of preservatives, chemicals, additives, modified corn products, or any other highly processed substitutions. As well, Sweet Thea opts for the highest-quality local products whenever possible. For example, their acclaimed fruitcake (a Christmas time favourite!) contains organic B.C. cherries soaked in premium brandy.

The Sweet Thea story began more than a decade ago when co-founders Thea and Laurie began selling fruitcake, stollen, cookies, and plum pudding every holiday season at craft fairs, farmers’ markets, Christmas shows and other events across B.C. and Alberta.

The popularity of Sweet Thea’s wares grew year over year from 2010 to 2019. But when the pandemic struck, the duo needed to find another way to bring their beloved creations to the masses. And so, for the 2020 holiday season, they opened a pop-up shop on Vancouver’s Main Street featuring not only their own baked goods and artisanal products but some of their vendor friends’ products as well.

The pop-up proved so successful that in 2021, Thea and Laurie opened Sweet Thea’s own dedicated storefront on Main Street, which quickly attracted raves for its quality, variety, and friendliness.

With the holiday season now upon us, Sweet Thea is rising to meet unprecedented demand for its seasonal treats: fruitcake, stollen, Christmas pudding and Christmas cookies. And now, it’s easier than ever – no matter where you live – to experience the incomparable tastes, textures and aromas of these European classics, thanks to the launch of FruitcakePlus.com.

“Over the years, so many favourite baked goods have been co-opted by corporate producers, and we sense there is mistrust in the marketplace about these mass-produced goods,” says Laurie Mercer. “Traditional ingredients have been replaced with cheap substitutes and processes have been mechanized, resulting in a considerable loss of taste, texture and other benchmarks of quality.

“At Sweet Thea, our baked goods are created authentically to ensure the highest quality and taste experience – at Christmas and all year round.”
