You can make a difference for Canadians in need this holiday season by giving blood

The need for blood donations is most crucial during the holidays. Canadian Blood Services needs all potential blood and plasma donors in B.C. to help fill every available appointment.

The holiday season is a time to reflect and think about how we’re contributing to our communities and supporting the people around us. For many individuals across Canada, a holiday spent with family and loved ones is dependent on the generosity of blood donors in extending a crucial lifeline.

The need for blood donations is undeniable. Donated blood is delivered to over 700 hospitals across Canada and approximately 17,000 units of blood are needed each week.

For these reasons, Canadian Blood Services needs the support of blood and plasma donors every day to maintain strong and healthy inventory levels this winter and beyond.

Blood donation centres often experience a decline in donations over long weekends and holidays, which poses a threat during the last few months of the year.

To ensure that patients in Canada receive life saving blood where and when they need it, you can be that lifeline by giving blood.

All blood types are needed and everyone who is able to donate is encouraged to do so.

Those donating blood for the first time must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 17 years old

  • Meet the height and weight requirements if between 17 and 23 years old

  • Be in good general health

  • Be able to perform your regular daily activities

Review the list of eligibility requirements for more information and take the two-minute eligibility quiz to determine your overall eligibility.

There are three main blood donor centres located in the Lower Mainland:

  • Vancouver Donor Centre, located at 4750 Oak Street

  • Downtown Donor Centre, located at 888 Dunsmuir Street

  • Surrey Donor Centre, located at 15285 101 Avenue

During the COVID-19 pandemic, donor centres have implemented enhanced measures, including wellness screening, social distancing, masks, and enhanced cleaning. Additionally, advance appointment bookings are required to ensure physical distancing. When pre-booking, ask a family member, friend, or colleague in your ‘social bubble’ to book an appointment and donate with you.

See blood.ca/covid19 for more on Canadian Blood Services’ enhanced wellness measures to ensure a safe donation experience for blood donors during COVID-19.
