Illuminate Yaletown is back! The astonishing annual event is ready to transform Yaletown into an immersive, hands-on, light show experience that’s completely free and open to the public. Presented by the Yaletown Business Improvement Association (YBIA), for the first time ever Illuminate Yaletown will be a two-night event, taking place February 14 - 15 from 5:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m.
Once again, the festival will feature light-based art installations that utilize advanced video and lighting technology that is both cutting edge and power smart. Now, imagine downtown Vancouver illuminated with brilliant swirling colours, geometric shapes, and vibrant patterns. Needless to say, the city centre rarely looks quite like this...
The first Illuminate Yaletown was in 2009 and featured 30+ light installations, attracting more than 40,000 people to the Yaletown neighbourhood. This year’s festival is expected to build upon past events and welcome a slew of new installations and activations, including an outdoor LED playground for adults, complete with swings, teeter-totters, and a giant LED “LiteBrite”, an 80’s arcade room hosted by Soho Billiards will feature classic games like Frogger, PacMan, and Galaga while special Olympic themed installations will commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Vancouver Olympics. Select restaurants and bars will also feature Olympic-themed cocktails as part of the occasion, including West Oak, Banter Room, Sciué Italian Bakery Caffé, House Special, Robba da Matti, Yaletown Brewing Co., and The Distillery Bar + Kitchen.
Crowd favourites will return this year as well, including the inflatable game pieces by Tangible Interaction, a virtual game room put on by Go2 Productions and a neon jungle (perfect for selfies) by HFour Productions.
