September 24 is World Maritime Day, an international day established by the United Nations International Maritime Organization to commemorate the importance of maritime culture, maritime environment security, and shipping safety.
The theme for 2020’s World Maritime Day is “sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet.” Leaders from the maritime sectors, particularly shipping, are encouraged to reflect on the sustainability work they’ve done, along with the urgent steps they need to plan to work towards a sustainable future.
To celebrate this special occasion, the port authority is hosting a free virtual celebration of World Maritime Day on its social media channels and website. The event agenda features a full day of digital content, including behind-the-scenes videos, a special virtual harbour tour, and a speaker presentation on sustainability at the Port of Vancouver.
Here are a couple highlights of what you can expect during the virtual celebration:
A VIRTUAL HARBOUR TOUR
This is your chance to participate in an exciting virtual harbour tour of Burrard Inlet!
For the first time in the port authority’s history, participants will have a unique opportunity to experience the endless sights and sounds of Canada's most diversified port from the comfort of their own homes.
A SPECIAL PRESENTATION ON SUSTAINABILITY
Following the harbour tour, join the port authority’s environmental team as they speak about current and future sustainability initiatives at the Port of Vancouver.
Hosted online at 7:00 p.m. PST, viewers will learn what sustainability means at Canada’s largest port and how these initiatives contribute to the port authority’s vision for the Port of Vancouver to become the world’s most sustainable port.
