Hot deal alert: You can fly direct Vancouver to Japan for $411

Find out how to get this ultra low-cost deal.

Cheap flights from Vancouver to the Land of the Rising Sun are still available this year, although only a few tickets for under $1,000 remain.

Japan Airlines' "basic" carrier, Zipair, launched its first Canadian route to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in March 2024, reducing the cost of direct, nonstop travel to Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) by hundreds of dollars.

The airline added additional flights after overwhelming success with its initial ticket sales, increasing its thrice-weekly service to five days over the summer.

However, the popular airline's lowest-priced tickets sold out quickly. At one point, it was possible to fly on a return trip between Vancouver and Tokyo for under $600.

Only a month ago, travellers could secure tickets between YVR and NRT for under $400, for as little as $361. Prices continue climbing, with the cheapest, one-day direct flights starting at over $400.

For example, a flight departing on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from Vancouver to Tokyo costs $411 booked directly through Zipair (see slide two).

This price is considered "low" for economy and is roughly $200 cheaper than usual, according to Google Flights.

Round-trip flights from Vancouver to Tokyo

Several travel date combinations through July and August offer return flights between Vancouver and Tokyo starting at just over $1,000.

Travellers looking for return trips under $1,000 can find options starting on Aug. 26 and continuing through Nov. 12.

For example, a flight departing from Vancouver on Tuesday, Sept. 16, and returning from Tokyo on Tuesday, Sept. 30 costs $873 when booked directly through Zipair (see slides three and four). Tickets need to be booked as two separate one-way tickets to secure the lower price; otherwise, tickets cost $891.

This price is considered "low" for economy and is roughly $685 cheaper than usual, according to Google Flights.

Flight prices may change quickly based on seat availability. If you want to secure a price, book the ticket right away (some airlines and travel suppliers allow you to hold seats, although you will need to confirm). Prices shown in this travel deal were available at the time of writing and may not be available when you look for them.
