It is a “disturbing” public declaration of physical threats being made to neglectful dog owners, says a Kitsilano neighbor – and it's situated right next to a large pile of poo.

A lawn in the 1600-block of Balsam Street currently boasts a sign that reads: “If I catch anyone walking away from a mess like this without cleaning it up. They will be looking at pictures of their dog from a hospital bed!!!!"

The sign sits adjacent to a pile of what appears to be canine excrement, on a lawn in front of an apartment complex in Kitsilano.

A neighbour, who wishes to remain unnamed, submitted a photograph of the Monday scene to Vancouver Is Awesome.

Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Cst. Tania Visintin said the force is encouraging anyone who feels threatened by the sign – including residents of the building – to call the police "so we can assist and investigate."

Visintin would not comment on whether the making of the sign constitutes a criminal offense.

Dog owners not permitted to use private property

According to a City of Vancouver bylaw, pet owners are not legally allowed to have their pet lay excrement on private property.

As well, dog owners or caretakers “must immediately remove” feces deposited by the pet or they could be facing more than $250 in fines.

Exceptions are made for a service or guide dog whose handler is physically disabled or blind.
