It may come as no surprise that Vancouver has been ranked as one of the best cities in the world, even taking into account the ravages of a global pandemic.

According to Resonance Consultancy’s World Best Cities Report of 2021, the city falls in 34th place, just behind Dublin, Ireland – and is the second-highest Canadian city on the list. The other was Toronto, which ranked 13th.

Though Vancouver ranked fifth in the people category, once surveyors took into consideration its levels of “educational attainment and foreign-born workers.”

The University of British Columbia is “a draw for the next generation of Vancouver’s increasingly global citizenry,” which is close to job opportunities created by west coast tech giants of Seattle and Silicon Valley.

The city was also lauded for its “proactive response to and containment” of COVID-19 cases, which “has endeared the city to even more global nomads who can work from anywhere.”

Vancouver’s shortcoming, however, is a high “price of entry” into the real estate market, according to the rankings.

“Vancouver’s housing prices are now mostly hitched to a global context, largely decoupled from local wages,” it concluded.
