It's a good time for new growth.

Starting Monday, residents rushed to the buy-up fruit-bearing, flowering, and shade-giving trees sold online by the Vancouver Park Board at the price of $10 each.

Within a few hours, some of the varieties sold out.

With a maximum of three trees per person, the municipality's semi-annual sale consisted of 21 tree varieties this year – including hibiscus, persimmon, magnolia, apple, cherry, plum, and Japanese maple.

“The sale is part of a larger effort to grow the urban forest by planting 150,000 trees since 2010,” explained Vancouver Park Board Chair Camil Dumont.

“The tree sales have been tremendously successful over the last five years,” he added.

Its popularity has led to enough trees being bought – for planting and growth – that could cover Stanley Park nearly five times over.

It's part of the City of Vancouver's Urban Forest strategy, which plans to restore forests across 25 hectares of the city’s natural areas and double the number of street trees.

Planting on private property continues to be “the biggest area of opportunity to enhance Vancouver’s vital tree canopy,” Dumont said – which has seen 19,000 new trees in exclusive areas.

“The urban forest plays many important roles: it cleans the air, absorbs rainwater, provides bird habitat, and improves our health and well-being,” according to a parks board statement

All tree sales will be made online, HERE. Only 1,000 trees are for sale.

To ensure no spread of COVID-19 during tree delivery, parks staff will be conducting contactless drop-offs to residents’ homes.

Trees are only available to residents of Vancouver, and proof of residency must be provided upon purchase.

Deliveries will take place Sept. 23 through Oct. 2.
