Vancouver on the Cheap: Sunset Burgers

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap".

If you were to create a Venn diagram where one circle was labeled "cheap" and the other labeled "awesome", the middle point where they cross over could be labeled "Vancouver on the Cheap". In other words, this is a weekly series on things to do and places to go in Vancouver that fall into that magical category of being both cheap and awesome.

Here's a daunting situation for any cheap-ite: you've got some evening plans downtown (cheap ones of course, maybe you scored some free tickets to a show) and then your friends say "hey, let's meet up for dinner beforehand!" You don't want to be the dud who bows out to save money, but you also don't want to spend $25+ on dinner.

What do you do? Simple, you say "Great! How about we check out Sunset Burger?"

Before we get into the good deals that exist at Sunset Burger, let's take a moment to drink in that decor:

My dinner date, Lima (I, Vancouverite).

I felt like I was walking into Max's Diner from Saved by the Bell. In fact, it was a little disappointing when my meal arrived unaccompanied by magic tricks (oh sorry, "illusions").

Sunset Burger lives somewhere in between a restaurant, a diner, and a fast food joint.  You order at the counter, but are met with real food at the end of the line. The prices are obviously higher than your average fast food establishment (although let's be honest, a meal at A&W isn't necessarily that cheap anymore), but you can still have a solid meal for under $10, so it passes my test.

But wait! That's not all! There are specials. Almost daily. Here's the skinny:

Monday: $3 burger

Tuesday: FREE fries with any burger

Wednesday: Hump Day! $7.49 for burger and a brew.

Thursday: Hump Day 2.0! Same deal.

Check their facebook page for confirmation on the deals, and also for occasional trivia questions that can result in free food!

Worth noting: their burgers do not automatically come with fries. You've got to order those separately (hence the free fries on Tuesdays). Also, they're not big on subbing with the deals, so be prepared to take what they're offering.

To sum it all up, at the end of the day I got to walk in with a $10 bill, be surrounded by 80's-nostalgia decor, consume a burger and a beer, tip my server, and walk away with change in my pocket.

CHECK MATE.
