A dead seal was spotted lying on a beach at the Garry Point Park in Richmond on Monday afternoon.

Stacy Song, who was visiting the park this afternoon, saw the seal’s cadaver deposited on a beach over on the west side of the Fisherman’s Memorial Monument around 3 p.m.

“Looks like it didn’t just die today, but I think it died not too long ago,” Song told the Richmond News.

“It had a slight odour, but it was not very strong. There was no sign, and not many people noticed it – perhaps they thought it was a piece of wood.

“I’m worried it will smell if no one takes care of it. We should respect animals, and give it a burial place,” said Song.

It’s not apparent how the seal died.

Steveston Harbour Authority told the News the beach where the body was found is not in its jurisdiction, since Garry Point Park is the City of Richmond’s property.

The News still waits to hear about more information from the city.
