The BC SPCA is calling for help to care for a neglected three-year-old pot-bellied pig that was found living in a small space with hooves so overgrown the animal was walking “like she had flippers on.”

The young pig, named Marigold, came into SPCA’s care through a cruelty investigation surrender in Chilliwack. The SPCA said Marigold was kept in a small, filthy bedroom for well over a year until she arrived at the SPCA’s Surrey Good Shepherd Barn this month.

Leiki Salumets, SPCA manager, equine and farm animal care, said Marigold came into the barn at least 20 pounds underweight, with severely overgrown hooves and suffering from skin irritation caused by mange mites.

“Marigold had overgrown hooves that caused her to walk like she was wearing flippers, causing tendon and ligament strain,” Salumets said.

“Every step was extremely uncomfortable for her.”

Salumets said Marigold was now on a weight gain feed plan and regular hoof trimming schedule, but would need further support to address her hoof and leg issues caused by neglect.

Once she’s healthier, Marigold will need a forever home — and she’s already making great progress.

“Marigold is a sweet and curious little soul who looks forward to her gourmet salads and pig pellets,” Salumets said.

“She is becoming more confident every day and is starting to accept pets and even belly scratches from staff and volunteers.”

The SPCA said it could cost up to $1,430 to care for Marigold and are calling for donations to assist with her medication, treatment, and regular health checks until she’s ready for adoption. Any additional funds will go towards providing care for other animals.

If you would like to help Marigold and other farm animals in need visit BC SPCA Medical Emergency or contact the Surrey Good Shepherd Barn at 604-574-1711 to make an adoption appointment.
