Kissa Tanto, the second joint-venture from Bao Bei owner Tannis Ling, along with head chef Joël Watanabe and sous chef Alain Chow, has officially opened. The 80-seat Japanese-Italian restaurant features chilled seafood platters, fresh pastas, family-style plates and cocktails from Wendy McGuiness (Chambar, Royal Dinette), as well as a wine list curated by Layla Shea (Burdock & Co., Farmer’s Apprentice).
Vancouver Urban Winery has launched three new wines, all from grapes grown in the Okanagan and made in Railtown. The trio includes a Merlot, Pinot Gris and VUW’s first-ever Rosé. All three wines are available exclusively at VUW.
The Cascade Room is now open for lunch daily from 11am onward. The new daytime menu includes Salt Spring Island mussels with Thai curry, red chili, lemongrass and coconut; grilled halloumi salad with blackberries; the Cascade burger with Blue Goose Ranch organic beef, double smoked bacon, cheddar and tomato chutney; oven-roasted wild sockeye salmon with fingerling potatoes, double smoked bacon, green beans and arugula salad; and mushroom and hazelnut tart with cream cheese, heirloom carrots and spring salad, among others.
Sunday, June 19, is Father’s Day and also Car-Free Day, and Rocky Mountain Flatbread is celebrating with $5 pints for Dad and Sunday night pizza-making for kids.
This Father’s Day, The Flying Pig restaurants in Gastown, Yaletown and Olympic Village, as well as WildTale Coastal Grill, will be shucking fresh oysters all day and night for only one dollar. All proceeds from oysters shucked and served will go to the Vancouver Firefighter’s Charity Snack for Kids program, which distributes snacks to in-need children at multiple Vancouver elementary schools throughout the year.
Yew Seafood & Bar is offering a special Father’s Day lunch and dinner on June 19. The lunch features items like braised short ribs and honey-glazed pork belly with fingerling potatoes, poached eggs, and chipotle béarnaise. Dinner is a three-course surf ‘n’ turf menu available a la carte or prix fixe for $85, and includes steak tartare, 12-ounce Wagyu striploin, lobster and white cheddar double-stuffed baked potato and old-fashioned chocolate cake with smoked vanilla ice cream, beer caramel and fleur du sel.
On June 20, Bauhaus will be hosting a dinner celebrating the wines of the Napa Valley region. The set menu is $130 per person, not including wine. Guests can choose which wines they would like to sample, which will be priced at cost, plus 10 per cent, making them well below regular list price.
The eighth annual Rib Fest returns to Mamie Taylor’s on Canada Day. The annual barbecue competition will see the outdoor grills fired up to welcome competitors Sarah Stewart of Juniper, Jeff MacIntosh of Dixie’s, Devin Blaney of Peckinpah, and Michael Kaisaris of Re-Up BBQ. The winner will be chosen by the public and tickets are $10. Mamie will also be offering a $15 rib platter throughout the afternoon and evening, featuring chef Tobias Grignon’s signature BBQ sauce, served with coleslaw, macaroni salad and corn on the cob.
