Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!)
I once had a Contemporary Art History professor who, on the first day of class, explained that he was not going to teach us about Contemporary Art in an all-emcompassing manner, but rather was going to teach us Contemporary Art as filtered through his personal interests and through his personal knowledge. A small difference when articulated through words, but a big difference when put into practice. This statement has stuck with me ever since, and it might go a long way in explaining the way I approach the Daily Flickr Pickr: the choices I make are based on my interests and my personal knowledge, but hopefully framed in a way that you, the reader, might find interesting as well. I mean, isn't that the first rule in writing - write about what you know? Okay, maybe the first rule in writing is to proofread, but I digress.
It was a photograph by standard ||| grey that made me realize this. The central element in the photograph was something that had photographically comsumed me the winter before last, the ever-present mechanical billboard. I found them utterly fascinating, and spent many a cold night hunting them down and shooting them (with a camera, of course). Whereas I was looking to capture the motion of the billboards through long exposures, standard ||| grey found a potential that I hadn't even considered - with very interesting results.
