Every day we share a single photo from our Flickr Pool shot by one of our faithful and talented readers (that’s you!)
I like the sound of that: Daily Flickr Pickr Day 604. One could argue that, as far as Vancouver is concerned, 604 is to Arabic numerals as YVR is to graphemes (my newest word). But like on so many occasions before, I digress.
Last weekend I had hoped to check out an event that happened at the Waldorf and was part of the Olio Festival. Sponsored by Color Magazine, Jamcouver attracted 40 top pro and amateur skateboarders from across Canada to compete for prizes on a one-of-a-kind street course in the parking lot of the Waldorf Hotel. It's something that I would like to have seen in person, but my schedule never opened up.
But speaking of seeing it close up, Supra Distribution couldn't have gotten much closer. There are a few things that make photographing skateboarding much easier: a nice wide lens, a position right up close to the action to place yourself and that nice wide lens; timing, anticipation, and trust in the rider's abilities. Having a super-powerful flash never hurt either. Of course, as with all genres of photography, careful placement of the elements of the image within the composition is key. Yup, this photo pretty much checks off all the boxes on the list. Here is Sascha & Nugget doubles.
