You'd be right if you thought Thursday night's moon seemed bigger and brighter than usual. Here in the Northern Hemisphere we were treated to a Harvest Moon, and we haven't had one in October since 2009.

A Harvest Moon (also known as "blood moon," or "travel moon," or "dying grass moon," in other traditions) is a full moon with a few special characteristics of timing and just how much light it provides for us on earth. (National Geographic breaks it down a bit more if you want to geek out.)

We won't see another October Harvest Moon until 2020, so for now enjoy these photos taken in and around Vancouver Thursday night of the spectacular lunar sight.

Shine on, Harvest Moon.
