GOAL #10: Local Food
Reduce the carbon footprint of our food. Our starting point is to understand "local food" and it's impact on environmental sustainability
Vancouver is working to define what "local food" means to the city and how it contributes to the overarching goal of creating a 'just and sustainable food system. ' In the meantime, we support and promote our farmers markets, community gardens and orchards, beehives and the keeping of backyard hens.
Local food is a powerful driver of environmental, economic and social well being – and we need to ensure that we do all that we can, collectively, to allow residents to participate in the local food system.
CHALLENGES:
Food is key to reducing our environmental footprint: much of today’s agriculture and food production’s reliance on synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides and fossil fuels contributes to environmental pollution, loss of habitat and climate change. At the same time, there are issues of jurisdiction that need to be negotiated. Food production in cities is never just a 'local’ issue. There are many stakeholders in the region, province and beyond that need to be accounted for. The City can’t work in isolation.
