Vancouverite Adam Lupton came out the big victor in a recent t-shirt design contest for Modern Amusement, a super cool, casual label from Southern California.
Adam's winning design was a hybrid between his love for both music (Bob Dylan, K-OS and Jack White were huge muses) and hand-printing. Currently in his fourth year in the Communications Design program at Emily Carr University, he's busy working away on two major grad thesis projects: a spiritual-esque middle path to our overuse and reliance on technology (a sociological and psychological look), and multiple-perspective three-dimensional exploded-view typography. Yeah, we said wow, too.
After interning at Ecstatic Designs and taking time to travel through Fiji and Australia, Adam is now doing freelance design work and selling shirts. Look out for very, very good things from this up-and-coming local designer.
And a huge V.I.A. congrats on the win, Adam!
THE PROOF
"What I do to keep my sanity outside of design."
1: Guitar. The best break I have if I'm waiting for something to load. Apparently, the ladies love it.
2: I silkscreen a lot. I absolutely love printing everything by hand. The tactility of it helps keep me away from being jailed in the world of 0s and 1s, pushing pixels around. Plus, I get to wear all of my ideas.
3: Painting is a giant passion. It's what I do whenever I have enough free time to finish a painting. This is my latest: "Society of the Spectacle (OMG! I have gum in my mouth!)" 48" x 60", oil on canvas.
4: I'm not sure I'd be alive without music. I've recently discovered vinyl, and these are the top two played albums.
5: I take cat-naps. They keep me fresh.
6: I play soccer about three times a week. Keeping fit trickles down to creativity.
7: Summer bike rides.
8: If all else fails, I put on my dancing shoes and hit the town.
THE QUESTIONS
What do you do and where?
I design, paint, print shirts, draw, play guitar, read, laugh, and eat wherever I can (mainly split between home and Emily Carr).
What neighborhood do you live in?
Currently in Lynn Valley.
What are you working on?
Design-wise I'm finishing up my two big grad thesis projects, working on some upcoming flyers for Barcelona Ultra Lounge, and putting a shirt order together.
Where can we find your work?
My shirts are carried in Planet Claire in Gastown, I have one shirt through Modern Amusement at Holt Renfrew, and soon-to-be flyers for soon-to-open Barcelona. Also, I potentially have things coming through Ayden Gallery in Tinseltown.
