Chinatown is moving and changing. The folks behind the Flats of Georgia decided to celebrate and recognize those improving and changing the neighbourhood for the better.

I had the privilege of speaking and judging the nominees for the Heart of Chinatown community campaign with socialite Frances Hui and city councillor Dr. Kerry Jang.

Innovators and local charities showed up to see who would be recognized as a game changer in local community.

We judges looked for individuality, charity, creativity, and ingenuity from nominees Pull Focus Film School, the Get Warm Project, and the Vancouver Chinatown Merchants Association.

The list was trimmed down to five nominees as folks packed Caffe Brixton for the wining announcement. I had a great time talking to local organizers and celebrating the community without it being too flowery. FYI, the food, coffee, and drinks were all delicious.

Congratulations to community organizer Mike Leung of Harvest Community Foods for winning the the Heart of Chinatown. The newly opened grocer was chosen for its fresh and and transparent food options as well as their taste for crowd sourcing.

Enjoy Harvest partner and fellow nominee Josh Michnik of This Space's beautifully stunning video love letter to the Chinatown/Strathcona neighbourhood below.
