Bob’s Burger fans: it’s time to ready your costumes and mark your calendars for this year’s third annual What's Up? Hot Dog! Bob’s Burgers takeover.
From Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, the intensely hip local hot dog joint will transform its space and menu to mimic the burger restaurant from the cult cartoon TV show.
If you’ve never heard of Bob’s Burgers, you’re either old, or you hate cartoons (and thus life in general; what are you still doing here?).
The Bob’s Burgers extravaganza “started with [the idea of ] let's just dress the shop up in a Halloween costume... and it just kind of snowballed into this big thing,” says shop owner Matthew Hagarty.
Perhaps more pertinently, dressing up as Bob felt like a natural fit for Hagarty, who says he identifies with the low-key character, voiced flawlessly by the one and only H. Jon Benjamin.
“[I’m generally] just kind of tired and defeated. And I felt that way beforehand, and then opening the shop and dealing with situations in the show that happened almost exactly in my life … that's just another thing that's kinda snowballed.”
Last year’s event saw more than 1,000 customers over three days, with hour-long line ups starting from before opening until close.
Hagarty says he’s more prepared for the onslaught this year, and has even persuaded some former staff members to come back and work with the current team during the four-day long event.
“This year we’re hoping to not run out of anything. I think last year on the last day we ran out of buns and I had to run to Safeway.”
- Bob’s Burgers Extravaganza runs Oct. 28 – Nov. 1 at What’s Up? Hot Dog!, (2481 E. Hastings St.).
