Bby Eateries: Green Bamboo - Mo than Pho

I guess this is kind of like discovering the Izakayas or Yoshoku beyond Sushi or Dosas beyond Butter Chicken.

I guess this is kind of like discovering the Izakayas or Yoshoku beyond Sushi or Dosas beyond Butter Chicken. We all know and love pho and lemon grass chicken on rice but there's still more to Vietnamese food than that apparently as a little eatery in Crystal Mall in Burnaby has. Green Bamboo (not to be confused with the Thai restaurant Green Basil on Kingsway) is on the street side level of Willingdon in Crystal Mall (the closest thing to Richmond in Bby). I used to stop by there to get subs on the way home from work as its street side entrance allows me to forgo the dreaded Crystal Mall parkade. Then I noticed all the pics of stuff beyond pho and subs on the wall (below cut). What especially stood out for me, as a noodle/soup lover (and should stand out for you too, Jef Choy), was this yellow soup noodle dish. Its lemon grass chicken and egg noodle in a "yellow satay soup" and its sick! Its rich but not as rich as laksa and only a trace of spice. It offers a much diff flavour than ramen or Taiwanese style beef brisket soup.....

Then there was the stewed beef brisket in tomato sauce or soup. This is offered as a noodle soup dish or with french bread (instead of rice) which obviously comes from Vietnam's French colonial influence. This actually turned out to be a dish similar to what my mom makes called Hayashi rice which just happens to a Japanese style western dish (yoshoku) as well.
