New family-owned Korean shaved ice shop opening in Richmond

Matcha and mocha shaved ice, and red bean and butter croffles, are expected on the menu.

A new Korean dessert shop is joining Richmond's food scene soon.

Fluffle Cafe is opening in a 10-person unit at the corner of Cambie and No. 4 roads, with the official opening date yet to be announced.

The family-owned dessert shop is spearheaded by local resident Jina Park with the help of her sister Ria Park and mom.

Jina herself has been working part-time in the food industry since she was in Grade 12, and fell in love with the dessert scene in 2020.

"I really enjoy serving food, making food, giving it to the customer and seeing them enjoy it. It's quite a nice feeling," said Jina.

Her dream has been to open her own cafe, and the opportunity presented itself when a family friend told the Park family a store was up for lease in Richmond.

"I knew I wanted to have shaved ice because if I enjoyed it, other people would and can enjoy it as well," said Jina.

Ria, while originally working as an animator, was finding her work industry slowing down with projects and decided to lend a helping hand to get the dessert cafe going.

"(Ria) has a really good palate and has really helped me develop the menu," Jia explained.

Fluffle cafe's menu will serve up Korean shaved ice in various flavours, including red bean with injeoulmi (soybean powder), mango with coconut cream, matcha and mocha.

Korean shaved ice is known for its milk-based ice with toppings and condensed milk.

Its menu also offers croffles (croissant waffles) with Nutella and banana, mango, and their in-house-made red bean paste topped with butter.

The Park sisters added that it isn't a Korean cafe without drinks like coffee, multigrain (misugaru) lattes, matcha and fruit-ades.

Concept behind Fluffle Cafe

Fluffle Cafe is nothing but a warm and comforting spot, from its bright yellow walls and sign with a bunny logo to its handcrafted, checkered tiled tables.

The name Fluffle is a mix between "fluffy" and "waffle," describing the two food items served on the cafe's menu.

Ria said there wasn't a huge meaning to opening the cafe; rather, it was a dream for her sister and mom to have a spot to call their own.

"We thought maybe it'd be nice ot have a little coffee nook for everyone in this residential area," she said.

Jina added that while there are many good Korean dessert spots in Burnaby, Vancouver and Coquitlam, there aren't enough in Richmond, specifically for shaved ice.

"We want to bring warmth to people who come in and visit us. It's a small space, but we hope people can enjoy the food when we open," said Jina.

Fluffle Cafe is opening at 130-9780 Cambie Rd.
