A new "old" restaurant is planning to take over a space left by a leader in local Indian food.
Tatta Chulha was the first Rajasthani restaurant in Canada (according to the owners) when it opened in 2021, though several others have opened since then.
Originally a food delivery business started in 2020, Tatta Chulha focused on vegetarian dishes from the Indian state of Rajasthan with influences from Jainism, a religion popular in the region. Vegan options were also available.
The restaurant offered dishes like Rajasthani kadhi (pakoras in gravy), panchmel dal (five lentil stew), and gatte ki sabji (steamed dumplings in spicy gravy) with jeera rice (cumin rice) and dessert, such as malpua, a sweet pancake.
Tatta Chulha closed quietly earlier this year. It appears Dabba, a food delivery business by Tatta Chulha, closed around the same time.
Tatta Chulha was located at 147 East Broadway, near the intersection with Main Street. That area has seen significant construction over the last couple of years as the Broadway Subway is built; across the road will be Mount Pleasant Station.
A business licence has already been submitted for a new restaurant in the same space called Old Dunbar Restaurant and Bar. As of publication, it does not appear to have a digital footprint.
