We have access to just about any kind of food imaginable at our fingertips here in B.C. thanks to a number of delivery platforms and apps that connect us with our favourite local restaurants.

Pizza and Chinese food used to be a given when it comes to getting food right to your doorstep, but things in 2020 are way - way - beyond that in terms of scope. And with COVID-19 keeping us at home and ordering in eats more, there's been a definite uptick in food delivery usage. But what are we eating the most?

Food delivery service DoorDash just released their lists for the Top Food Items ordered in the nation for 2020 so far, and they've also broken it down by province.

In beautiful British Columbia, we seem to love some popular favourites in some key cuisine categories, including the old reliable pizza and Chinese. There's also plenty of Mexican fare in the mix, which shouldn't be too surprising; earlier this year we learned Vancouver is the "capital of Mexican food" in the nation.

Topping our list for most-ordered food items are burritos, those perfectly portable powerhouses so easily customized for your palate's preferences. We also love chicken in a few forms: in lettuce wraps and quesadillas, and as wings. And our country's calling card dish, poutine? In B.C. it's the eighth most-ordered food item. Of all things sweet possible for dessert, here in B.C. we like Key Lime Pie the most, too - it ranked tenth.

Top 10 Food Items ordered in British Columbia in 2020 so far:

  1. Burritos
  2. Chicken Lettuce Wraps
  3. Miso Soup
  4. Chicken Wings
  5. Bacon Cheeseburger
  6. Chicken Quesadilla
  7. Chips & Guacamole
  8. Poutine
  9. Margherita Pizza
  10. Key Lime Pie

Poutine, though, didn't even make the list in provinces like Ontario and Nova Scotia, but it tops the list in Manitoba, and lands second in its province of origina, Quebec (behind French Fries proper). Ontarians skew towards Indian and South Asian fare more, while in PEI the top spot goes to Pad Thai. In Newfoundland and Labrador something called a Pineapple Taco made the list, and Crispy Chicken Sandwiches are tops in Saskatchewan.

Nationwide, burritos top the list - except in bowl form. They're followed by butter chicken, and our national dish, poutine, in second and third position, respectively. Sushi rolls, poké bowls, and plant-based burgers also track across Canada - but none of those make B.C.'s top 10, surprisingly. DoorDash offers a list of the top 20 food items ordered coast to coast. As a bonus, for the truly curious, they've got the top five most-requested condiments, too.
