Thurlow and Georgia Streets will have temporary street, sidewalk, and parking closures on Nov. 13 due to a heavy helicopter operation.

Some streets and sidewalks will be closed on Sunday (Nov. 13) due to a helicopter operation transporting heavy signage to a downtown Vancouver building.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thurlow Street from Canada Place to West Georgia Street and Georgia Street from Thurlow to Burrard Streets will be closed.

A helicopter will be transporting four pieces of large scale LED signage for Canadian Western Bank (CWB), which will be carried from Coal Harbour to the top of the CWB building at the corner of West Georgia and Thurlow Streets.

Access to residences and businesses in the area will be still be available, but residents can expect intermittent noise and street, sidewalk, and parking limitations in these areas:

  • W Georgia St will be closed from Thurlow to Burrard St; 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Thurlow St will be closed from Canada Pl to Georgia St; 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • East/West streets intersecting Thurlow St will remain open except for intermittent closures when the helicopter is flying over the street.

The largest of the four pieces weighs 6000 lbs and eight flights will be needed to carry the four loads. Each flight will take between 10 to 15 minutes across an approximately three-hour period.

Vancouver police will be onsite as well directing traffic and drivers are asked to follow detours and "No Parking" signs.

Those travelling in and around the area should plan ahead and expect delays.
