Police have arrested the suspected driver after a 24-year-old man was killed Sunday night crossing the street in Kitsilano.

The Vancouver Police Department says the victim was walking near his home with a friend; as they were crossing West 4th Avenue at Arbutus Street at about 11:30 p.m. he was struck by newer model grey sedan. The driver failed to stop.

The man died at the scene.

Police have arrested a 25-year-old man and a 63-year-old family member of the suspect.

"We asked for help to solve this crime, and after receiving significant information from the public, VPD officers identified the suspected driver and arrested him yesterday at his home in Vancouver for the fatal hit-and-run,” says Sgt. Steve Addison in a press release. “We also arrested one of the driver’s family members and are investigating whether that person acted as an accomplice after the fatal collision.”

The VPD says they believe the vehicle was travelling east on 4th Avenue just ahead of the fatal collision and the sedan appeared to have been travelling at high speeds. Bystanders tried to help the victim and witnesses told police what they saw.

Investigators reviewed the scene Monday and were led to the suspects' residence in South Vancouver in the afternoon.

Police would like to speak to people whose vehicle or business camera captured footage of the suspect vehicle in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call the VPD at 604-717-3012.
