More heat forecast for Metro Vancouver in early September

This week temperatures on the coast could hit 25 C, while areas just inland could hit 30 C.

The heat will return to Vancouver in this week's forecast.

Another warm stretch is forecast for Metro Vancouver.

September is expected to start off with a series of sunny days, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Philippe-Alain Bergeron.

"This massive, big, strong ridge is moving in," Bergeron tells V.I.A. "That'll be expanding Monday."

The ridge of high pressure will bring warm, dry conditions for several days, he adds.

A high of 23 C is predicted today, Sept. 1, though the humidex may mean it feels like 29 C.

"By Tuesday, it's 24 C by the coast and 28 C inland," says Bergeron.

He notes that even on the coast, that's about 5 degrees above normal for the beginning of September.

By Wednesday, Sept. 3, the ridge is expected to be fully established, bringing the late summer heat with highs of 25 C near the water and 30 C inland.

Thursday and Friday it looks like the ridge will lessen in strength a bit, but it's uncertain right now, Bergeron says. If the ridge does break down, that would mean some cloud cover coming in on Thursday or Friday, but no precipitation is currently forecast.

Fire, smoke, and haze

An issue across the province, Bergeron notes, will be smoke and haze, as wildfire smoke is trapped.

He notes that haziness is expected in Vancouver, but it'll be worse in the interior.

At the same time, given the dry conditions and warm temperatures, the concern for wildfires igniting this week is considerable.

"These are favourable conditions for fires," Bergeron says.
