Poll: Vancouverites unsure if city should get a professional women's hockey team

With the launch of the PWHL in the east, should Vancouver try to get a team?

New York and Toronto players in the PWHL battle for the puck. Vancouver locals don't seem certain on whether a team in the city is a good idea.

Would locals support a professional women's hockey team in Vancouver?

They seem split in a new poll from Vancouver Is Awesome.

While the majority do support the idea of a new team, it's by no means a large margin. There's just a five per cent difference between those who think Vancouver should get a team and those who don't think so.

Oddly, it seems there's more support for a women's team in Vancouver from people outside of Vancouver, as there's a 10 per cent difference in the overall vote between the two options, with more than 55 per cent being in favour of a Vancouver team.

There have been a few attempts to start a professional women's hockey league over the years, but few have been as ambitious or have gotten the attention like the PWHL, which played its first games in January.

So far six teams are part of the young league, and much like the early days of the NHL, all of them are in eastern North America: Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, New York, Boston and Minnesota. For the first season none of the teams have names and just go by the city they're in.

This weekend players from the PWHL participated in the NHL's All Star Weekend.

The expansion of the PWHL has been speculated on by sports media personalities, but no announcements have been made.
