Why is there a giant banana in front of Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver?

The eight-foot tall statue is part of something bigger.

An eight-foot tall banana statue was plopped in front of the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver on Nov. 2, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Careful, don't slip on that giant banana peel!

Vancouverites passing by the city's waterfront may be taken aback by the big yellow statue set up at Jack Poole Plaza.

The peel isn't the remains of King Kong's midnight snack but is part of an awareness campaign by The Community Against Preventable Injuries (Preventable) to raise awareness about injuries and preventable accidents.

"To remind you that most injuries you can see coming, we've put a massive banana peel sculpture by the Olympic Cauldron," writes the non-profit organization on Twitter. "90 per cent of accidents are 100 per cent preventable."

Big Banana, the official name for the "silly sculpture" according to the organization, will be on display on Nov. 2 from 8:30 am. to 3:30 p.m.

This isn't the first time a banana peel has been plopped around Vancouver.

In 2019 and 2017, Preventable placed the eight-foot tall symbol for an “accident waiting to happen” at the intersection of Granville and Georgia streets– one of Vancouver's busiest junctions.

The banana peel, a lighthearted campaign, is one of the ways that the organization is reminding British Columbians that injuries are preventable.
