Vancouver park board shares concept for renewal of Yaletown dog park

One feature the park is definitely getting is a toilet with a $645,000 budget

Since dogs can't talk the City of Vancouver is looking for humans to provide some insight on the off-leash area at Coopers' Park in Yaletown.

The park currently has a basic off-leash area where dogs can run free, but the city is looking to update the park with a variety of amenities.

One of those will be a Portland Loo, an outdoors washroom; the province is funding the $645,000 project through COVID-19 economic recovery program.

"While the cost of the Portland Loo (approximately $150,000 -$185,000 per unit) is generally consistent, the sites selected for installation can often have the greatest impact on overall costs," writes the city in a release.

Some of those costs include design, consultation, site preparation and related fees.

Aside from that, details haven't been decided by the city for Coopers' Park and they're looking to the public for feedback.

"We want to hear from you! Provide feedback on the Coopers’ Park dog off-leash area renewal until April 6," states the city on their website.

The off-leash is following similar renewals of other features at the park, like the fitness area and playground.

Ideas for the off-leash area include synthetic turf which can withstand the heavy use the park sees, fencing and a double-layer gate, and seating.

Options the park board and city want to hear about from the public about include water play features, shelter and agility items.

The final design and construction timeline will depend on the public's feedback and the decisions that follow.
