The Fairmont Waterfront in downtown Vancouver is among the city's many "sustainable" hotel options. Vancouver was recently named the top global city for having the most hotels with top eco-credentials.

Vancouver has more sustainable hotels than any other city in the world, according to a new report.

A study, conducted by the energy comparison website, Uswitch, analyzed the eco-credentials of thousands of hotels in the world’s 200 largest cities on Booking.com. The holiday website booking engine introduced a sustainability badge in November 2021 that allows users to sort through the most eco-friendly accommodations.

Using the sustainability filter, the company determined how many eco-conscious hotels are available in each city and then compared that number to the total number of hotels listed to create a percentage score.

Vancouver claimed the top spot with an impressive 44 per cent of its 89 hotels listed that are recognized for their eco-credentials. Report authors noted that the Fairmont Waterfront hotel was a "stand-out" hotel that is famed for supporting its surrounding environment with its eco-efforts. "The Fairmont Waterfront homes 250,000 honeybees, recycles and composts where possible, and encourages all event planners to use carbon-neutral alternatives."

Stockholm ranked second in the ranking, with 87 of its 216 hotels being awarded for their sustainability. The rest of the top five is dominated by Canadian cities, with Toronto coming in third with nearly a quarter (25%) of all hotels recognized as sustainable.

Calgary followed Toronto in fourth with over 23 per cent eco-friendly accommodations. Another Albertan city, Edmonton, came fifth with 22.56 per cent of its hotels being sustainable.

Other holiday spots to make the top 20 list include South Africa, Colombia, Germany and Morocco.

“It’s brilliant to see that global awareness of the importance of living more sustainably is continually growing, and there are so many easy ways to reduce our impact on the planet – from using a green energy supplier to opting for more environmentally-friendly holidays," said Will Owen, Energy Expert at Uswitch.

"Some of the incredible hotels in this list are great examples of how business can reduce waste, source local produce and reduce their energy consumption and if this has made you think about your carbon footprint a little bit more, use our carbon footprint calculator to find ways you can reduce and offset your household’s CO2 production.”
