Mikayla Hong is the epitome of science coexisting with art.

She is completing her master's in bioengineering after obtaining a degree in chemical engineering at UBC. She is also a biomedical engineering intern at Vancouver General Hospital.

On top of all that, Hong has become a seasoned self-taught artist who paints recreations of iconic Vancouver storefronts, shops, and various other historic local businesses.

Her creations can be viewed on Instagram and purchased through her website.

"I mainly use watercolour paints and ink. I'll use alcohol-based markers and just some pen and then sometimes, depending on the piece, I'll do a little bit of digital art on top of it, to do some of those really fine details," explains Hong.

There is also a philanthropic element to her work.

A portion of profits from each sale goes to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre. In addition, Hong organizes a separate week-long 'friendraiser' each month, with some proceeds benefitting another local charity connected to a specific art piece.

The artist remains overwhelmed with the positive support in the community.

"Growing up, I have so many good memories from my parents taking me out to different parts of Vancouver. I'm so lucky, being able to share what's so special about Vancouver and to trigger those happy memories in other people has been really special."
