For my money, when it comes to new old school soulsters, Jamie Lidell is the King. Def rooted in everything from the 60s Motown, 70's funk swagger, 80s Prince styles, he still puts just enough modern touch on it to keep things fresh. Figured Me Out from his last album, Jim, is one of my all time fav songs. Its pure funk/soul without being hammered by some tired break beat and letting the piano and groove ride on its own and got a little bit of Zapp & Roger/Brick sprinkled on top in supplement. She Needs Me from his new disc, Compass is kinda like Figured Me Out slowed down for a little Sunday morning shag amidst a beautiful bird chirpin sunrise.....yeah, this guy knows what he's doing.
