Cannabis edibles, drinks & more could be in Vancouver stores by Christmas

B.C.’s Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) has issued a product call to licensed cannabis producers to suggest new products to be legalized later this year.

B.C.’s Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) Wednesday issued a product call to licensed cannabis producers to suggest new products to be legalized later this year – just in time to be Christmas stocking stuffers.

"This product call marks an exciting time for the LDB as we work toward introducing new product categories into B.C.'s legal cannabis market," said branch general manager Blain Lawson.

"We are currently working with over 30 licensed producers and look forward to engaging with new suppliers to expand our wholesale product assortment."

The branch said the call is a chance for licensed producers to identify their interest and ability to supply edibles, beverages, topicals and extracts, and other products to be included in soon-to-be legalized non-medical cannabis product categories.

Selected products would be available to wholesale customers in both licensed private retailers and government-run BC Cannabis Stores throughout the province.

The product call will open at 9 a.m. Aug. 15, 2019, and will close at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Under federal law, the production and sale of edible cannabis, cannabis extracts and cannabis topicals will be legal in Canada Oct. 17 under the Cannabis Act, by provincial and territorial retailers as well as federally licensed sellers of cannabis for medical purposes

The federal government said because it will take time before the new cannabis products become available for purchase, people should only expect a limited selection to appear gradually, in physical or online stores, and no earlier than mid-December.

The branch said licensed processors must provide Health Canada with notice at least 60 days before making a new cannabis product available for sale.
