The new year won't be arriving with a bang in Vancouver.
Or a boom, or any other sort of explosion. At least not legal ones.
The Vancouver firefighters union, IAFF 18, is reminding folks that there's a ban on fireworks in the City of Vancouver currently.
"As we gear up to welcome the New Year, let's remember that our city has been firework-free since 2020," they state on social media. "Celebrate responsibly – there are plenty of ways to ring in the New Year without the boom and crackle."
At the same time, the formerly annual public New Year's Eve fireworks show off of Canada Place won't be happening, either. Earlier this year it was announced there would be no fireworks over the Burrard Inlet.
The fireworks show was cancelled in advance of the event one year ago, as well. However, hundreds showed up on the streets and seawall to look skyward, expecting the explosions. The organization behind the event is hopeful they'll be back in 2025; a countdown to 2025 started earlier this year.
Vancouver isn't the only major Canadian city going without fireworks this year; Montreal has cancelled its celebration in the city's Old Port. Those hoping to ring in the new year in front of the TV won't have the CBC to turn to, either.
