As Vancouver's venerable La Taqueria enters its final stretch before welcoming guests to its new location downtown, the restaurant will be wooing tastebuds with a free taco day.
On July 1 (Canada Day), La Taqueria will celebrate by giving out 500 tacos at their soon-to-open Seymour and Hastings location.
From 4 p.m. until they're all out of tacos, the first 500 folks to show up will each get one free taco.
While an opening date has not been announced yet for La Taqueria Seymour, the anticipation is continuing to build for the restaurant, as it means the popular casual Mexican spot will have a home again in the downtown area.
In mid-May, La Taqueria bid farewell to its original Vancouver "Pinche Taco Shop" location ahead of the site's redevelopment. The closure had been in the works for some time, in tandem with the build out of the new restaurant location a few blocks west.
Similarly, last fall saw the final drinks poured at sibling concept Chupito, the Michelin Guide-endorsed patio cantina that operated behind La Taqueria on Hastings. This spring, Chupito 2.0 got up and running in a new-to-them space; it has taken over half of the La Taqueria restaurant space on Yukon just below Broadway.
Meanwhile, the countdown is on to the debut of La Taqueria at Seymour and Hastings (367 Seymour St).
"Our Seymour location will feature a 50-seat taqueria and patio, embodying the essence of an authentic Mexican-style taqueria," described a rep for La Taqueria by email in January. "Focusing primarily on tacos and margaritas, we are returning to our roots to bring you an unparalleled culinary experience."
