Vancouver seafood shop and restaurant set to re-open after fire

Out of commission for the past few weeks, the seafood shop and casual restaurant is excited to welcome everyone back

A longtime go-to on Main Street for sustainable seafood, including fish and chip meals, has been out of commission since early November when a fire forced The Fish Counter to temporarily close up shop

After a successful inspection, The Fish Counter at 3825 Main St is ready to once again welcome seafood lovers on Saturday, December 16, one of the business owners tells V.I.A.

"We want to thank everyone from our supporting community and to the firefighters who were able to stop the spread of the fire. Because of our local fire department's quick response and [the] resident who called this fire in we have been able to get back into operations before Christmas, support our staff, and get our families [sic] business back!" shared the happy owners on The Fish Counter's Instagram ahead of the re-opening.

The Fish Counter has been a pillar in the community for nearly a decade, and serves only "responsibly harvested seafood options from local fishers."

The restaurant and fishmonger/boutique grocer is beloved for its cozy, rustic atmosphere and menu of casual seafood eats, like fish and chips made with halibut, salmon, or cod, as well as fish tacos, chowder, and sandwiches.

The Fish Counter was opened in 2014 by acclaimed chef Robert Clark, one of the co-founders of Ocean Wise who was named to the Order of Canada in 2020, and Mike McDermid (formerly of the Vancouver Aquarium), though the two sold the business to a local family in 2021.

The re-opening of The Fish Counter on Main isn't the only reason the sustainable seafood shop and restaurant is celebrating.

The Fish Counter is set to expand with the addition of a second location in Vancouver, with details about the new venture set to be unveiled very soon.

UPDATE FEB 15: The Fish Counter will open this month at 1818 Commercial Dr.
